I had this idea that being in Portland would completely change my views on sustainability. I envisioned myself being taught millions of new things everyday and becoming a more enlightened human being, with a greater connections and love for our environment. I imagined myself being blown away by the efforts of different communities and organizations to save the world by recycling, using sustainable energy and eating more local and wholesome foods. I assumed that the people of Portland lived within a system of sustainability implemented and prioritized by the local governments, with a few key figures leading the charge. What I didn't expect was to hear a five year old girl say, "I care about the environment", without being prompted, on one of my first days of work.
In every big city there are hybrids and hummers. In Portland there are hybrids and hummers… but there are more bikes. Even a freshly painted white washed fence will have a couple grains of dirt imbedded into the paint. A city is the product of the people and the people of Portland are passionate and determined. The art community is booming, volunteers are plentiful, police officers engage in conversation with the homeless and the farmers markets brings everyone together. Community is strong and when the sun shines Portland booms.

What I have found in Portland is a greater connection and love for people. There are like minded people out there, you just have to find a place where the peoples passions are just as strong as yours.
No matter where you are in Portland you can most likely see one of three snowcapped peaks, these Portlandians seem to want to keep it that way.
